Who Needs a Temporary Residence Card (TRC)?

If you’re a non-EU student, you’ll need a Temporary Residence Permit to stay legally in Poland after your visa expires.

You must apply for the permit before your visa runs out. Once approved, you’ll receive a Temporary Residence Card (TRC) — an official ID that confirms your legal stay in Poland. Paired with your passport or travel document, it allows you to cross the Polish border freely.

The initial permit is typically granted for 15 months, and it can be renewed for up to 3 years, but no longer than the duration of your studies.

Important: You must apply for the TRC while you are still legally in Poland — that is, after arriving, but before your visa expires.

How to Apply

To apply for a Temporary Residence Permit, visit your local Voivodship Office.
You’ll need to submit the following documents:

  • A completed application form

  • Passport-sized photographs

  • Proof of identity and citizenship

  • Proof of address in Poland

  • A certificate from your school confirming your enrollment

  • Proof of health insurance

  • Evidence of sufficient financial resources

The full procedure costs 390 PLN.

For EU Students

If you’re an EU citizen, you don’t need a residence permit. However, you’re required to register your stay at the local Voivodship Office within 90 days of arriving in Poland.

You’ll receive a certificate of registration, free of charge and valid indefinitely, proving your right to stay.

Information for EU Citizens

If you are a citizen of an EU member state, you only need a valid travel document or a national ID (confirming your identity and citizenship) to enter Poland.

However, if you plan to travel outside Poland during your stay, it’s a good idea to bring your passport with you, as it may be required to enter some neighboring countries that are not part of the EU.

For stays shorter than 3 months, there are no formal requirements.
Since your studies will likely last longer, you’ll need to register your stay at the local Voivodship (Provincial) Office.

This registration of residence is a formal step confirming your right to stay in Poland for an extended period.

Visa Requirements for Non-EU Citizens

If you’re a non-EU citizen, two key documents are required to enter Poland:

  • A valid passport

  • A visa (if applicable)

Do You Need a Visa?

In most cases, yes — you will need a visa to enter Poland. However, citizens of certain countries are exempt from the visa requirement for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) in the Schengen Area.
You can check whether your country qualifies for visa-free entry here:
👉 Visa exemption list

Poland is a member of the Schengen Area, meaning a visa issued by Poland allows travel within most EU countries (excluding the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and non-EU countries).

Types of Visas

  • Type A – Airport Transit Visa
    Not suitable for students.

  • Type C – Short-Term Schengen Visa
Allows stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period in the Schengen Area.

  • Type D – National Long-Term Visa
Issued for up to one year. It allows you to stay in Poland and travel in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Note: Visas can only be extended in exceptional cases. If you plan to stay in Poland longer, apply for a Temporary Residence Permit.
